Turtle Apple Spiders
These apple slices are the perfect sweet treat for your Halloween party, or an anytime spooky snack. Ingredients with an asterisk (*) are available seasonally right here in North Iowa! Click on select ingredients to find them nearby or stop by your local farmer’s market.

Ingredients
- 2 apples* sliced into ½" slices
- 1½ cups chocolate chips we like dairy-free dark chocolate
- 1 tbsp coconut oil
- ⅔ cup pecans toasted
- flaky sea salt
- 1/4 cup caramel candies or caramel sauce
Instructions
- Line a medium baking sheet with parchment paper. Slice apples into 1/2″ thick round slices. Make a small incision in the bottom of the apple slices and stick in popsicle sticks. You can remove core or apple seeds if desired. Remove excess moisture by patting apple slices with paper towel.
- Melt chocolate in a double boiler or in 30 second intervals in the microwave stirring often. Mix coconut oil in with the melted chocolate.
- Dip apple slices in chocolate and place on prepared baking sheet. Sprinkle with pecans and place in refrigerator to harden for 10 minutes. Place remaining chocolate in a zip top bag.
- Remove tray from refrigerator and gently peel apple slices off parchment paper. Set them aside. Slice off small corner of zip top bag containing chocolate. Use the small opening to make lines of chocolate resembling spider legs. Place apple slices on top of still warm chocolate.
- Return to the refrigerator to harden again, this time for 5 minutes. Serve.
- Melt caramel in a double boiler or microwave. You can also use caramel sauce. Using a zip top bag with a small hole cut in the corner, drizzle caramel in spiral on serving plate. Drag a toothpick from the center to edge of plate to create spider web shape.
- Remove pan from the fridge. Very gently peel apples off parchment paper. Arrange on serving plate with additional pecans and flaky salt. Enjoy!
