Gourmet Compound Butter
Add flavor to your favorite dishes with compound butters! Melt over steaks or poultry, add to sauces, cooked vegetables, and pastas, top baked potatoes (or sweet potatoes) or add to your mashed root vegetable mixture. These will also make great accompaniments on bread, pancakes, and other baked goods. Don’t forget to try them on fresh corn on the cob.Ingredients with an asterisk (*) are available seasonally right here in North Iowa! Ingredients
- 1 Stick butter or vegan butter
Herb Flavor Ideas
- 1-2 tbsp sage leaves*
- 1-2 tbsp basil*
- 1-2 tbsp mint*
- 1-2 tbsp rosemary*
- 1-2 tbsp thyme*
- 1-2 tbsp oregano*
- 1-2 tbsp celery leaves* or lovage*
- 1-2 tbsp fennel*
- 2 cloves garlic* Grated or minced very fine
Sweet Ingredients
- 3 tbsp maple syrup*
- 3 tbsp honey*
Add-In Ideas
- ½ tbsp smoked paprika
- ½ tbsp citrus zest
- 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
- Allow butter to soften and come to room temperature.
- In a bowl combine softened butter and herbs or seasonings of choice. You can use a hand mixer to combine, or the back of a spoon. Make sure to mash the herbs against the bowl to release their flavors into the butter.
- Taste. Add more seasoning as needed.
- Place butter in an airtight container or place in the center of waxed paper and roll into a log.
- Butter will last 2 days on the counter. Butter with herbs and/or garlic will last 2 weeks in the fridge and 2 months in the freezer.Butter with maple syrup and/or honey will last up to 6 months in the fridge, or 1 year in the freezer.
